Save-the-Date: Welcome event on Sunday, September 15th, 2019, from 12-4 pm at Arcata’s Redwood Park.
Help organize fun welcoming event for Latinx families, students and larger community.
A group of HSU staff members, students, and community members have come together to strategize how we can more cohesively bring together local Latinx families, HSU Latinx students, and the Arcata Community. With this goal in mind, we have decided to organize a welcoming event on Sunday, September 15th, 2019, from 12-4 pm at Arcata’s Redwood Park.
We will include various family-friendly activities such as hikes in the Redwoods, music, free food, basketball, door prizes, fun science and engineering challenges, and relevant tabling presenters. This event will foster community building by highlighting HSU campus resources along with community opportunities that will raise awareness and empowerment within the local Latinx community.
We are eager to provide this opportunity to HSU students and community members, especially those who have not yet experienced the joy and wonder of our beautiful Redwood Community Park and forest. We invite you to join us in this effort, and your participation may come in the following forms:
Tabling to provide information on your organization, business, or club
Leading a fun/enriching activity for the students and/or families
Donating items for door prizes
Donating food for a free meal for all in attendance
Helping to promote our event
Your presence at the event
Any monetary or in-kind donation
We look forward to working with you in this effort to further nurture the relationship between Latinx students and families and the local community. If you are interested in being a part of this exciting and fun event, please sign up on the attached google form. If you have any questions, please contact Anh Bui (Anh like “Ein”stein and Bui like buoy) at firstname.lastname@example.org or 717-984-8726.
The City of Ferndale hoping to share information about its Housing Element update
The City of Ferndale is seeking input from area’s Latino community on recently updated Housing Element of the General Plan. They are seeking input on existing capacity for development of future housing as well as current housing conditions. This helps the city come up with goals and actions to address Housing Needs in the community. The City has started a draft and has had a couple meetings with the Council and the public on the matter. The draft will come back before the Council for further discussion and adoption at the end of August.
To date, the City has not been successful in engaging the area’s Latino community on this issue. The Council has requested information on the draft be disseminated to organizations who may be able to assist us or point us in the right direction. We are sending the draft element (available on the website) and a translated version of the “Framing the Challenge” section of the document to your organization in the hopes that it will encourage interest in the draft and feedback from parts of the community you help to represent. If you have ideas about how to best capture feedback on the draft apart from attending meetings (typically held Wednesday evenings, 7-9ish), please respond to the City Manager (cc’d here).
Thank you for the work you do for our community!
